Me, a good gardener? Anyone who has seen my yard would laugh at this idea. I avoid going out to work on the yard. I truly don't understand people who say they find gardening relaxing. BUT, I do want to grow a vegetable garden every year. When I move into a new house one of the first things that I do is mentally determine where I will plant my vegetable garden. When my mother came to visit this last week she told me that she has grown a vegetable garden every year since 1973. That's longer than I've been alive. It's no wonder I want to grow a garden every year, I have helped my parents grow a garden every year I lived at home!
We moved into this house two years ago, and this year I'm going to plant our garden, and I'm going to try something new. I'm very excited! It's called Straw Bale Gardening. I checked out the website and ordered the book. I got the book yesterday and read the whole book last night. I'm am that excited about this new gardening idea!
Here are the benefits of Straw Bale Gardening:
- Low upfront cost
- You can do it anywhere
- NO WEEDING (AMAZING huh!!!!!)
- You can start earlier than most gardens because it's like a greenhouse
- Did I mention NO weeding!
- It's a raised bed
I have a sunny spot in our backyard, and I'm just going to plop 6 straw bales down back there and be in business. I decided to start with 6 bales this year. I will probably expand next year depending on how well it goes this year. I must admit I was very tempted to convert my entire front yard into a garden, because I get the best sun there, but my EC nixed the idea...killjoy!
