I found out that farmers advertise straw bales that they have for sale on CraigsList. I found a farmer who was willing to sell me straw bales for $4 each. It's not a GREAT deal, but it's reasonable. I now have 6 straw bales sitting on the lawn in my back yard, ready to be conditioned. I will be watering and fertilizing these straw bales for the next 12 days and then planting in them. I'm very excited!
It was quite an adventure last night going to go and pick up the straw bales. My friend, Jeni, came with me and we borrowed another friends pick-up truck. We loaded 13 bales into the truck. I use the term "we" very loosely. The farmer loaded the bales, if I had done it they would never have fit. We were afraid they would fall or get blown off. Oh, silly city folk that we are. They were fine. I did of course take my turns very slowly.
I will keep you updated on my straw bale gardens progress!
Feeling very provincial!
